Chattanooga, Tenn. (September 24, 2019): The Chattanooga-Hamilton County/North Georgia Transportation Planning Organization (the TPO), Chattanooga-Hamilton County Health Department, Bike Walk Chattanooga, Bike Walk Cleveland, Bradley County Health Department, and TN Highway Safety Office’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Initiative have partnered with area schools for International Walk to School Day to promote safe routes to school, encourage healthy activities, and strengthen community relationships.
Locally, 11 schools in three school districts, six cities, and two states will be joining thousands of schools across all 50 states and in more than 40 countries around the world.
Walk to School Day events raise awareness of the need to create safe routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, and creating connections between families, schools, and the broader community. Participating schools will be supported by local first responders, adding a great opportunity for our students to interact with our hometown heroes.
“Walk to School Day is a great opportunity for students to start the day off with a healthy, fun, activity,” said Jonathan Gibbons, Senior Multimodal Transportation Planner for the TPO, “As we look forward to the start of fall, we hope this event will inspire students and their families to think of walking as a great way to get around and enjoy the beauty of our region.”
Parents, teachers, community leaders, local first responders, and students will participate in these scheduled Walk to School events. Please see the picture above for specific information.
